This month, we’re proud to spotlight Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, one of the three nonprofit organizations featured in our annual giving letter this year. Founded by the Rotary Club of Milwaukee in 1982,
the organization started with a modest donation of 600 pounds of apples. Today, it stands as the largest local hunger relief organization in Wisconsin, distributing over 40 million pounds of nutritious, culturally relevant food across 35 counties annually.
Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin’s impact is both broad and deep. From July 2024 to June 2025 alone, the organization distributed 40,571,289 pounds of food to families across the region. Food is sourced from a network of retailers, growers, wholesalers, and individual donors, totaling over 41.5 million pounds, before being sorted and stored at their food banks in Milwaukee and Appleton. These locations are the heart of a collaborative effort with nearly 600 trusted local partners and community programs dedicated to feeding families in need.
The organization’s success is powered in large part by its generous volunteer base. In the past year, volunteers contributed 44,870 hours of service, equivalent to the efforts of 23 full-time employees. Weekly shifts offer a rewarding, often life-changing experience for those who donate their time, knowing they are directly helping to alleviate hunger.
Courtney Meyer, Feeding America’s Major Gifts Officer, guided SITE Staffing on a recent tour of their facility, sharing insights into their mission. Courtney emphasized the importance of offering the healthiest food options available while honoring individual dignity— “with absolutely no judgment.” She also noted that Feeding America measures success not only by pounds distributed, but by the strength of its relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners.
