As we close out Veterans Month, SITE Staffing is proud to shine a spotlight on Fisher House Wisconsin, one of the three nonprofit organizations that has long been part of our annual giving letter. Fisher House Wisconsin holds a special place in our hearts for the comfort, dignity, and stability it provides to the families of our nation’s heroes.
Fisher House Wisconsin supports the construction and operation of “comfort homes” located near military and VA medical centers. These homes offer free lodging and support to the families of active-duty service members and veterans while their loved ones receive medical care, ensuring no one must shoulder the emotional or financial burden of being far from home during critical moments.
Recently, we toured the Milwaukee Fisher House, the first Fisher House in the nation fully funded by the state it resides in. Together, the Milwaukee and the upcoming Madison Fisher Houses will provide 11,680 nights of free lodging every year, saving military and veteran families up to $2.3 million in out-of-pocket costs annually.
With 16 private family suites in each home and a thoughtful, intentional design, Fisher House creates a true “home away from home.” From fully stocked kitchens where families can cook meals together, to quiet spaces for rest, to small but meaningful comforts, like the reliable presence of Diet Coke. Each element reflects Fisher House Wisconsin’s mission to make guests feel at home. Even details like providing black towels for makeup removal reflect the organization’s commitment to meeting real needs for adults and children with intention and care.
During our visit, Steven Rose, the Executive Director of Fisher House, shared that every aspect of Fisher House exists because someone, at some point, needed it. He also emphasized that every gift given to Fisher House is deeply personal to the veterans and military families they serve. Steven encourages businesses and community members to take a tour and see firsthand the impact of their mission.
Fisher House Wisconsin maintains top-tier financial transparency, earning a and 4 out of 4 stars on Charity Navigator, ranking them among the top veteran-serving nonprofits in the country. Next spring, the organization looks to break ground on its Madison location, expanding its support to even more families across Wisconsin.
